Chapter Fifteen
With everything that had been happening lately with Dad and the baby I had hardly noticed how Annie had grown up. She was nearly fifteen and had matured greatly since she had started working in the shop this last year. Her work at the hospital the year before had aged her as well, but just seeing the way she took charge of the customers in the shop made her seem even older. As a child, although pretty, she had always been stick thin, yet now her skinniness had changed into a slender figure with curves in all the right places. Her brown curls framed her face and brought out the deep chocolate brown of her eyes especially as she had her hair tied up in a loose bun at the nape of her neck, rather than in two plaits as it had been for school, giving her face more shape to it. Whenever Jonathan came round our house to give me or Dad a report on the shop he often mentioned how she seemed to attract the attention of all the delivery boys from the other shops as well as any other lads that were home on leave from the army. He didnât seem to think it was a problem, but she was still my little sister and I wanted to keep her young forever. It seems strange now, for it wasnât that long ago that I was wishing that both Annie and Lizzie would grow up one day and be free to leave home, finding love and happiness for themselves. Now I wasnât so desperate to escape the house myself, I wanted the girls, to take their time growing up, to find the perfect person to spend their lives with. Having seen how often she would sit at the table in the evenings writing letters and almost race to the door when the mail was delivered to check for any letters addressed to her I suspected she had met someone who was away.
One evening, a week before Christmas, I sat down at the table with her out of ear shot of the rest of the family and asked her, âWho are you writing to love?â At first she didnât reply but then she answered, âHis name is Tom, and he lives with his parents a few rows away. Heâs the same age as William but he too has joined the army and is in France. He came into the shop one day a few months ago when he was on leave to buy a chair for his parents, and we got chatting. Jonathan told me to help Tom carry the chair home and we agreed to meet one evening. He took me dancing. It was so lovely to be able to dance with someone who actually knows how to dance. We went with Elizabeth, so we werenât alone or anything. Since then we have been writing to each other. He had to return to France you see, but
